Bergmann Direct have supplied a new diesel-driven Mobile Roll Packer to M&S through their waste facilities manager Helistrat, to deal with bulky waste at their Sheffield distribution centre. The Bergmann Mobile Roll Packer compacts in 35-yard open containers achieving a compaction ratio of around 4:1.
All the waste generated at store-level is back-hauled to M&S distribution centres and includes cardboard, plastic, polystyrene, broken displays which are a mixture of metal, glass and plastic. The waste streams are separated by hand and then either baled (cardboard) or disposed of in open containers.
The roll packer rolls the waste in the open containers with a 1800kg spiked drum to maximise the tonnage in the containers, reducing the number of container exchanges. The diesel-driven unit is driven from container to container as and when compaction is required.
The Mobile Roll Packer has a unique container-moving arm which can pick up hull containers to 12 tonnes and move them in and out of position, avoiding the need for separate roll-on-off vehicles to be called out. This is particularly useful at weekends when a single roll-on-off vehicle trip can be as much as £750. Prior to getting their Mobile Roll Packer, M&S had a roll-on-off vehicle permanently stationed on site from the waste contractor at a high cost, which has now been eliminated.
