Waste Rebates
For many organisations, waste disposal is simply seen as a necessary cost of doing business. But what if the materials you’re throwing away could actually generate revenue?
With the right systems in place, common waste streams like cardboard, plastic, polystyrene, and paper can become valuable resources. Recycling rebates allow businesses to earn money back for clean, sorted, and baled materials — turning what was once a cost centre into a sustainable income stream.
The 3 main factors that determine a good rebate price are:
1) Quality of material
2) Volume of waste
3) Location

Many businesses are missing out on rebates for waste streams that, when properly sorted and prepared, can generate real value.
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is one of the highest-value waste types, especially white EPS from appliance packaging, which can command up to £800 per tonne when compacted into dense blocks using a polystyrene compactor.
Cardboard is widely recycled but varies in value based on grade. Clean, dry mill-size bales of corrugated cardboard (OCC) offer the best rebate typically £70–£100 per tonne, depending on market rates.
Plastic rebates depend on both polymer type and clarity. Clear PET and HDPE fetch higher prices than coloured or mixed plastics. Sorting by type and colour, and baling where possible, significantly increases value.
Glass must be crushed into cullet for effective recycling. Clean, sorted cullet is used in bottle and glass production and can generate modest rebates, particularly for large volumes.
Wood waste can offer rebates when sorted to higher grades. Grade A clean wood (free from paint, nails, and contamination) is preferred for reprocessing into chipboard or biomass fuel.
Metal is a high value stream, with rates depending on type. Copper and aluminium command premium prices, while steel and mixed metals also offer good returns when separated and stored efficiently.
